Download Full Movie Astro Boy DivX
Perhaps the most curious thing about Astro Boy is just how long it’s taken to find its way to the big screen. A popular Japanese manga series on its debut in the ’50s, it spawned the first ever anime series in 1963 and two more TV iterations. Though it hasn’t dented Western geek culture to the extent of the darker-minded Akira and Ghost In The Shell, there’s a strong and appealing wish fulfilment idea at its core: a young boy dies and is reborn as a superpowered robot to ward off evil forces.
Flushed Away director Dave Bowers steers this adaptation with generally unspectacular results. Astro Boy never quite finds an interesting angle on its concept and ends up as a decidedly second-tier animated affair. The story concerns a high-flying school kid Toby (Highmore) who is vaporised in a freak accident and brought back artificially by his scientist father Dr Tenma (Cage). Using a strand of Toby’s hair to replicate his DNA and a powerful ‘Blue Core’ energy source, Toby is revived as Astro – a robot who retains his old memories and is blessed with super strength and the ability to fly. The titular android is rejected by his father and soon falls out of the floating Metro City to live on the rubbish-strewn surface of Earth with other outcasts.
As with the majority of kid’s animated adventures, Astro Boy sticks to the trusted line of mixing slamming spectacle (of which there’s a little too much) and positive messages about fitting in and finding your place. There’s also a bit of WALL-Eness in its environmental outlook, but that falls into the background as frenzied action takes priority. One of the movie’s main narrative thrusts – Astro’s search for a father figure – is dealt with quite badly. Nathan Lane’s slippery Hamegg (very much in the Ron Moody Fagin mould) provides paternal support for the abandoned Astro on the surface before his ‘real’ dad decides to make an unexplained u-turn and welcome him back with open arms.
Incidentally, you’d think that hiring Nicolas Cage to voice Astro’s mad scientist father would have resulted in some nutjob fireworks. That’s not the case as Cage leaves his crazy at home and delivers his dialogue straight-faced. It’s a voice performance that’s symptomatic of the rest of the cast who, with the exception of Matt Lucas as the enthusiastic Sparx, fail to bring much zip to their roles.
Astro Boy grinds through its narrative gears predictably, testing the hero until he finds a place to belong. One of the film’s interesting hooks – the existential dilemma of how Astro defines himself as a robot with a human mind – is clipped at the heels. Such things may seem heavy duty for a film that’s aimed squarely at youngsters but it’s hardly Asimov’s Laws of Robotics and, frankly, a little bit of brain nourishment never hurt anyone.
